A lot of members of our book club struggled to get into this book, but those who persevered were rewarded with a few laughs and the potential of a gripping story. Unfortunately, we felt that although the story line got quite gritty at times, the writing didn’t maintain its promised levels of enjoyment and the ending was a bit disappointing. The main character was not one you could feel sympathetic towards, and McEwan’s style of writing without any chapters made reading this novel a bit of a slog. Saying that, some were pleasantly surprised by the strange twist of events in the story, where you begin thinking the story is all about scientific advances in energy, and it turns out to be about framing a guy for murder. It’s a story to concentrate on during the day, rather than reading in bed just before lights out, as it does take some concentration to follow.
