I loved this book, which is a must read for any fans of his earlier novels. But be warned, it's not an easy read in places, and I guarantee there will be sentences and passages that will escape the understanding of any reader. There are also quite brilliant passages, especially the quick fire dialogue between the main protagonist, Bobby Western, and a cast of intellectual and entertaining misfits. The book has the structure and (in places) the pace of a thriller, and features: a Government conspiracy that threatens Bobby's freedom; treatises on quantum mechanics and mathematics; the aftermath of the Atomic Bomb (Bobby's father worked with Oppenheimer on the bomb); an unconsummated incestuous love between brother and sister; the Mafia's responsibility for Kennedy's assassination; and, not least, the question of God's existence. Ultimately, maybe the book's lack of clear meaning is an expression of life's lack of meaning in a Godless world.
