This was an unusual book to read. The language had an innocence that would perhaps be "of the time2 in terms of the first person writing style but also hindered in the understanding of the situation (World War 2) and what it must have been like for people living in Liverpool at that time. Much of the story was predictable but this just made it easy to read rather than being an annoyance.
